This 180 hour career training program instructs students in the collection and preparation of blood samples for analysis. Phlebotomy Technicians are responsible for performing arterial, venous, and capillary blood draws and preparation of these samples for analysis at the laboratory.
Students will learn about blood collection equipment and laboratory procedures; quality assurance; infection control; specimen handling; special collection procedures; arterial puncture procedures; and anatomy and physiology. Students will also become certified in American Heart Association BLS (CPR/AED) for Healthcare Providers.
This program involves a combination of didactic lecture, online lessons, skills demonstrations, and 100 hours of clinical practice at our partner facilities. Clinical time is scheduled following the classroom portion of this program. This course prepares students to sit for the American Society for Clinical Pathology Certified Phlebotomy Technician examination.
Participants must be in good health and able to provide Code One Training Solutions, LLC a certification of health signed by a physician that includes a negative Tuberculin Skin Test or Chest X-Ray within 1 year prior to the start of clinical. Students must also attend the mandated clinical and classroom hours and achieve a score of 75% higher throughout the program. This program requires a steady hand and good manual dexterity. Students are required to wear uniforms to clinical sites.
Phlebotomists work independently in a variety of settings including hospitals, outpatient laboratories, patient's homes, and long term care facilities. Job prospects for Phlebotomists are expected to be excellent due to the increasing care needs of an aging population. The average hourly wage in Connecticut for a Phlebotomist is $21.96/hour.
